Knowledge Base » [125205] What can I do when I get a Data Execution Prevention (DEP) message?
Operating System: Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista
Product or Service: GatherPlace
Client Software: Java, GP4
Data Execution Prevention, or DEP, is a security feature in Windows operating systems. The DEP feature is set "on" as a default in the operating system. Since the setting only affects Windows programs and services, it does not normally interfere with GP4 or Java. However, if you get a DEP exception when trying to host or join a GatherPlace meeting, the following steps should correct the issue:

  1. We have seen the DEP error when trying to install GP4 on a Vista computer that does not have Java installed. To make sure this isn't the problem, either install Java on the PC and then try to download and install GP4 again or use one of the following direct download links for the GP4 installer program. Once you have the GP4 installer file downloaded, double-click it to install the GP4 program on your computer.

Host version (login required) - http://www.gatherplace.com/gp/gp4-download.jsp
    Guest version - http://www.gatherplace.com/client/
The latest version of Java can be downloaded at: www.java.com.

  2. If step 1 above does not resolve the issue, scan your computer for viruses and then run Windows update to make sure you have all of the available patches and updates and try downloading and installing GP4 again.

  3. If after scanning the system for viruses and getting all of the system updates you still get the DEP message, you'll need to adjust the DEP settings on the computer.

To change the DEP settings or allow specific programs that may be blocked
  1. Go to: Control Panels > System > Advanced tab (or Advanced System Settings) > Performance section - click the Settings button > Data Execution Prevention tab.

  2. If the Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select option is selected, scroll through the list of programs under the option and make sure GP4 and Java are in the list and the checkbox is selected next to both. If either GP4 or Java are not in the list, click the Add... button, browse to the Program Files folder, find the GP4 and/or Java executable file* and then click the Open button.

    * The GP4 executable is located in: C:\Program Files\GatherWorks\OmniView4 and is called gp4.exe (the .exe may not be visible, depending on your system settings).

    * Java is typically located in: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin and is called java.exe
Note: Depending on the version of Java you have installed, the jre6 folder may be named differently such as jre1.6.0 or jre1.6.0_07.
If you have multiple versions of Java installed it is best to allow them all in the DEP settings.
